Are you someone who struggles to speak fluently at times? Are you looking for alternative ways of treatment for stuttering rather than the traditional speech therapy? Is your stutter having a damaging affect on your life and overall confidence? A few years ago I would have answered yes to all of these questions but after a lot of hard work and a determination to succeed I managed to overcome my own stutter. In this article I write about how I managed to achieve fluency and about the alternative therapies for stuttering.
Hate is a strong word but I have to say that I hated my own stutter. This however was a good thing as this hatred is probably what helped me to eventually eradicate the stutter from my own speech. I will never forget how hard and scary it was when I was asked to read out from a book in front of the whole class when I was at school. Trying to meet girls was very tough and the whole dating experience was one big nightmare. Just imagine having a lack of confidence with your speech, being aware that you stutter and having to meet your new girlfriend's parents and friends. All of those questions, I wanted to have a t-shirt printed with the answers to some of these questions so that I could then just point to the answer etc. I was someone who stuttered more when I was under pressure or when I was put on the spot. I also found it hard to meet new people and again was likely to stutter quite badly in these situations.
I am not sure what other people think of speech therapy but lets just say that it did not help me too much. After attending speech therapy for well over a decade you would be expecting some sort of improvement wouldn't you say, I would think so anyway but guess what I was actually stuttering far more not less.
I needed to find an alternative approach and decided that I would try to help myself. I then started to look into how I could improve my own self-confidence and self-esteem and also decided to study who the best fluent talkers were speaking and breathing compared to me. This is a brief description of how I went about achieving fluency. There is more information about my How To Stop Stammering Centre on my website. |
