A lot of money was spent this off-season in order to get the 2006 Cowboys football team back to the Super Bowl. Terrell Owens was probably the biggest signing in the free agent market this summer and there is a lot of excitement in Dallas because of it. He is a big upgrade over Keyshawn Johnson and should help Dallas move the football this season after finishing 15th in passing last season. Another big name coming in will be Mike Vanderjagt, who finally gives the Cowboys a reliable option for putting the ball through the uprights. After giving up plenty of sacks last season, the Cowboys decided to upgrade a couple of spots on the line, but lost their hold over from the Super Bowl years in Larry Allen. Allen was aging and a tough cap casualty for the team. Akin Ayodele and first round draft pick Bobby Carpenter out of Ohio State should help to replace Scott Fujita and Dat Nguyen at linebacker. La'Roi Glover might be missed at tackle as the team is lacking depth at the position, but he wasn't really a fit for the new defensive scheme. Drew Bledsoe is a solid option at quarterback for the 2006 Cowboys football team, but he needs to protect the ball a little better. He had 17 interceptions and was sacked 49 times last year, so they are going to need him to stop killing them while still being productive. It should be easier for him this year when defenses have to worry about the threat of Owens at wide receiver. He is a gamble but one that the Cowboys will hopefully lead to a Super Bowl appearance, similar to the trip the Eagles took in his first season in Philly. Terry Glenn provides another option as last year he went for 1,136 yards, this one-two tandem will be one of the tops in the NFL this season. Julius Jones is a great running back, but he has had problems with durability, playing only 21 games in two seasons with the team. He is going to need to stay in the lineup for Dallas to be a top tier NFC team. The Cowboys move to a 3-4 looks genius with the defensive ends they have to rotate in the game. Greg Ellis, Marcus Spears, and Chris Canty have been dominant in their roles and the scary part is that Spears and Canty should only get better after completing just their first year in the league last season. Dallas also should be set at line backer with stars in DeMarcus Ware and now Akin Ayodele. The team did lose Fujita and Nguyen, but with the depth and youth at the position they should not have created too big of a hole to fill. The secondary here is one of the tops in the league, with Terence Newman, Aaron Glenn, and Anthony Henry solidifying the corner back position and Roy Williams bringing hard hits and big plays to the safety position. The 2006 Cowboys football team is coming into this season with the highest expectations of the Bill Parcells era. The pressure is on as this might be the last year he remains as the head coach. Terrell Owens is a gamble, but he's worked out well starting out for new teams in the past, before wearing out his welcome. Maybe he's grown and maybe he hasn't, but this should be one good year for the Cowboys if he gels with the team. I'm expecting 10 plus wins here even though they have a pretty tough schedule ahead of them. Take the Over 9.5 wins at Pinnacle and feel comfortable cashing the ticket come January. |
