A College Career Planning Guide

Author: Jakob Culver

As a student you must be having qualms about your career, and everything though seems to be attractive still appears to be confusing as what should be the modus operandi! I Ideally you should start doing the groundwork in the college itself by choosing the majors which suits your aptitude and interests!

Look for the most promising option

Of all the options that are available to you choose that one that is the most promising and above all should apt as per your aptitude!

1. Narrow down on your choice of interest and that should obviously interest you (you can see in what subjects you are good)!

2. From the chosen areas, now evaluate each option one at a time, discarding those that may not be financially or personally rewarding. Again bear in mind that whatever you chose must go well with your attitude and flair. Give serious thought to how you want to spend the rest of your life. For example, a teacher's job entails the least physical work and lots of vacation time, while a traveling salesman's job requires you to travel for long stretches at a time.

4. Campus career counselors will be more than ready to help you and every aspect, so seek their advice and guidance also.

5. Define your priorities in life which is very is important and your parents are your best resource in this area.

Learn and Polish Your Skills

Your next step is to equip yourself with right skillfulness, here's how you can do that:

1. Your training for job will begin right at the college campus, when you choose a major which will best for preparing you for the career that you have chosen. For example, a career as an accountant calls for formal education in those subjects. You may want to start with accounting subjects for careers such as Financial Controller or CPA.

2. Be informed about the latest trends by subscribing yourself to industry journals that would keep you abreast with current events in your field.

3. Getting your article published or participating in seminars would be the good idea! That would add on to your limited knowledge! Take a part time job that will add to your experience.

4. Studying hard and getting top grades are a must.

Getting grooved for the Finale

You are very near to the realization of your dreams once you reach in your final year or semester in college from there onwards you begin the real quest for a job.

1. Scan all the job advertisements in your focus area; separate the 'must-have' and 'preferable' skills within them. This shows whether you are lacking skills, and if yes, in what areas.

2. Take the help of HR professionals, student counselor or Internet resources for creating a good resume as this would be the first interface between you and the company! You should always highlight your skills, abilities and experience.

3. If possible attend mock interviews conducted by your college career office that would help you in building the confidence and also you will be able to learn interview etiquettes.

Rest be persistent in your efforts, though it may take some time but your efforts will never turn futile!
